Beauty BizCamp Inc. is a new non-profit program designed to expose teens, ages 12-18, to the breadth of careers in the beauty industry – and inspire them to become the industry’s next leaders. The camp’s curriculum intends to accomplish this by preparing Gen Y with the knowledge neccessary to drive innovation in beauty, and serve the needs of every consumer. “I want the beauty industry to reflect the needs and voices of all women but that can only happen if we are prepared to obtain a seat at the table. My goal is to be a driving force in cultivating the next generation of beauty leaders and I believe that providing this platform is an essential step in making that happen,” explained Corynne Corbett, founder of BeautyBiz Camp. Throughout her career, Corbett has mentored many young women interested in succeeding in the beauty industry. So she came up with the idea of creating this ‘summer camp’ – with the vision of making the beauty industry a more accurate reflection of the people it serves. Corbett has held key editorial positions at Elle, Real Simple, Essence, MODE, and Heart & Soul. She also works as a brand strategist and consultant, with major brands including Clinique, Maybelline New York, and L’Oreal USA. Corbett – along with the camp’s director, Dr. Asiah Maason, who is a leading expert in international promotion of education and global competency – have kicked off the first summer of BeautyBiz camp by recruiting a slew of industry experts, to be instructors. The instructors are: Lisa Price, founder of Carol’s Daughter; Patricia Reynoso, editor of Glam Belleza Latina; Tai Beauchamp, a publishing industry veteran and founder of The BluePrint Group; Marc Baptiste, photographer; Yvette Valentine, global marketing for Ballature Beauty; Yessenia Almonte, beauty director, Seventeen magazine; Lauren Branche, brand director, Carol’s Daughter; and Wikham Boyle, journalist and head of business development for Just Shea. The following curriculums are being offered in 2013: Sesson 1, July 22-26 – Behind the Beauty: Insiders offer insights into beauty industry careers, an what it takes to prepare. Sesson 2, July 29 – August 2 – Behind the Products: A closer look at how beauty products are created – from concept to R&D, as well as creating consumer excitement and telling a product’s story online and in stores. Session 3, August 5-9 – Behind the Glam: An in-depth exploration into the evolution of hair, makeup and nail trends. Experts discuss everything from creating looks for the runway, to crafting a celebrity statement on the red carpet – as well as editorial and advertising interpretations. The cost? $1,000 per session/week. Scholarships are also being offered. To be accepted into the program, prospective students must submit an application that includes an essay.
